Sacred Love

As Hafiz tells us, "the subject tonight is love and for tomorrow night as well, as a matter of fact I know of no better topic for us to discuss until we all die!" 

An overwhelming number of our poetry, songs, movies, and novels circle around love. It’s our deepest human motivation—the primary energy of our life force. It moves us to make our morning coffee, buy flowers for Valentine's Day, and care for our children or ailing parents. In fact, when we look beneath the surface of our lives, we discover that all our striving, our yearning for success, our desire for worthiness—these are often just pathways back to love itself.

Through my own inner reflection, and through the privilege of witnessing my clients' journeys, I've found that underneath it all lies our longing for love in its many forms: love of truth, love of the divine, love of Self and self, love of nature, love of our beloveds. Even our pursuit of raw achievement often masks a deeper question: "Am I lovable? Am I worthy of love—in my own eyes, in others' eyes, in God's eyes?"

As Lord Byron wrote, "There are four questions of value in life. What is sacred? Of what is the spirit made? What is worth living for, and what is worth dying for? The answer to each is the same: only love."

Perhaps the most beautiful discovery in this journey is that self-love becomes a portal into what’s referred to as “uppercase-S” Self-love—where we remember that we are, and always have been, love itself. It is there that the river of our individual love merges into the ocean of sacred, divine love.
